Are your weapons failing in the heat of battle?

Come to the gear repair workshop March 18 at 1 pm. Hosted by Rob!

Learn how to conduct basic tests on your gear to discover why it isn’t working, and complete repairs. A must-have skill for those going to tournaments. Parents of kids going to tournaments strongly encouraged to attend.

Pre-register by emailing ccfc@shaw.ca

Free for members of the club (or parents of younger members who need to know how to do repairs at tournaments). $35 for nonmembers. (Or just get a $40 membership for the workshop and -fencing all through March!)

Spring Tournaments!

Hold the date! The board has set dates for the club’s 2017 tournaments:

Escrime Sundae will be held Saturday, April 15

Fence-a-thon May 27 7pm – May 28 7 am

Both tournaments will be held at the Royal Oak Middle School, and will feature mixed (men & women) events. These tournaments will be unsanctioned (i.e. no CFF license required).

Escrime Sundae is a Saturday tournament that ends in ice cream. A great tournament for fencers of all levels. Plans are afoot for a youth event at Escrime Sundae. This is absolutely not motivated by a scheme to get double the ice cream for the youth.

The Fence-A-Thon is a fundraiser that has raised more than 25,000 for the BC Cancer Agency since 2005. It begins with an evening tournament, followed by a midnight feast, and then fencing games continue until morning.

Fencing in pop culture

I’m always on the lookout for fencing scenes in books, TV or movies, so I was keen to discover Lord & Master. It showed up on Acorn.tv (a streaming service for fans of British TV), and features a fencing main character.

The show is a frothy crime caper featuring a suave millionaire with a mysterious past — who won the national fencing title in his youth — as he teams up with a hapless lawyer to solve crimes in a highly improbably fashion. The first episode sees the murder of a fencing master! (Sorry Jed).

Dutch subtitles.
