Fence-a-Thon 2017: The Return of the Revenge of the Night is coming up fast!
The event is planned for the night of Saturday, May 27th from 7pm til 7am. If you haven’t already registered, please do it now (now now now now now!) as lots of fencers from other clubs are waiting to see if we will have a good turnout before they commit to the trip.
Fence-a-Thon is a twelve-hour, overnight fencing marathon to benefit the BC Cancer Foundation. All events (Mixed Foil, Epee and Sabre) start at 7pm and the competitions will run to about midnight. After that, we’ll have our traditional midnight feast and fence on until dawn!
This event is a ton of fun and a ton of work, and we need your help to make it a success. Here’s what you can do:
- Register online at https://askfred.net/Events/moreInfo.php?tournament_id=36879
- Start raising pledges for the charity. Every $100 you bring in will give you a ticket in our prize draw, and fundraisers will have first dibs on our great prizes.
- Drop by Casa del Smith this Saturday, May 13th from 2 to 4pm to paint grips as prizes (you MUST RSVP by email to anna_smith@shaw.ca or we will not have enough supplies)
- Talk to businesses you know who may be able to donate a prize to the event
- Register to volunteer before, during, or after the event.
The Volunteer Tasks we need doing are:
- Directoire Technique: one Head of the DT and several runners to keep the competition running smoothly (making poules, seeding the DEs, handing out bouts, etc)
- Set-Up Crew: Everyone who can make it should be at the gym at 5pm to start setting up pistes, machines, signs, tables etc.
- Clean-Up Crew: Everyone who can stay awake should plan to stay until 8am to help clean up the gym and kitchen.
- Cooks: Several households to cook meals suitable for groups of 6-10 people, to add to the buffet for our Midnight Feast. If you would like to cook, please get in touch so that we know what you plan to bring to avoid doubling up.
- Kitchen Prep Help: Several people to heat food, organize the buffet tables, and make sure that the food is food safe when it’s served.
- Kitchen Clean-Up: Several people to tidy the kitchen after the meal is finished.
- Coaching and Games: Several people to organize fencing events after midnight, if we need some help staying on track.
- Drivers: As many NON-FENCERS OR NON-ALL-NIGHT FENCERS as we can get to drive exhausted visiting fencers back to the ferries/bus station downtown. Without rides, a lot of these people would wind up on the 11am boat and that’s a seriously long night. Please do not offer to drive after staying up all night and fencing — it just isn’t safe.
- Prize Hunters: Anyone at all with leads on great prizes, I would enormously appreciate your help. It’s a ton of work!
Please email Anna with your volunteer positions of choice and let me know if there is anything else that you can bring to this event.
If you would like to help painting foil grips this coming Saturday, please RSVP by Friday morning and I would be happy to send the address. If you would like to paint your own foil or epee grip, please arrive with it already sanded so that no shiny varnished spots are showing and bring your own brushes if you have them. Sanding your grips doesn’t take a lot of fancy materials – just a piece of sandpaper and some elbow grease! – but if your grip is a dark colour and you want to paint a light-coloured pattern, you may also want to prime your grip with white acrylic paint (Dollar Store quality is fine).
Questions? Give me a shout!
Looking forward to seeing you all there,
Anna |
