Remembering Jonas (aka Yonas) Sadek
Capital City Fencers’ Club is marking the passing of one of our founding members, Jonas Sadek, who passed away in March at age 92.
Jonas was a founding member of the club. He made the donation to purchase our original equipment, and one of our earliest competitions was named in his honour. (You can still see the results for the 2008 Yonas Sadek Island Cup on Ask Fred!). Jonas’ widow, Nancy, wrote to tell Rob about his passing, and said “Even though he did not take part in the club for some years of late, the founding of the club was one of his proudest accomplishments and the years he did participate were some of his happiest experiences.”
Jonas’ obituary can be found here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/ottawacitizen/obituary.aspx?n=mahmoud-sadek&pid=188607759
Nancy has made a bequest of $2,000 to the club in Jonas’ name and has requested that the funds be used to support youth competition.
Thank you, Nancy, for continuing Jonas’ generous legacy with this bequest.
The annual (Almost) Midnight Pizza Party!!!
Yes, our annual end-of-season post-practice preposterous pizza nightis on for June 13!
The plan: Come to fencing on Wednesday June 13. We will wind down a bit early (9:30 / 9:45) and head out to the Boston Pizza at Saanich Plaza (about 15 minutes by car). Parents/family members and those latent fencers who haven’t been around lately are all welcome to join us for pizza. This is a no-host event.
Address: 3510 Blanshard St #102, Victoria, BC V8X 1W3
Contact stacy at stacyc if you need more info or assistance with carpooling/pick up arrangements.
TFA medalists
Congratulations to Noelle Chang Zhelka on her bronze medal at the TFA Y14 women’s foil and Ahmed Elbassiouny who won Gold for Y14 men’s foil *and* Gold in Junior mixed foil at the Tri-City fencing Academy youth event on May 27th.
Since the cadet foil event was cancelled, they also joined the cadet epee event for fun–first time in epee for each of them! Miko would be proud!
Kudos to their respective coaches, Isaac and Orion.

(Ahmed, left, with his second gold medal at the TFA.)
(Noelle, right, with her bronze medal)
Leprechaun attack!
Fencers competed for glory and cereal by trying to knock a box of lucky charms set on a pillar the furthest distance using a leprechaun-step-lunge combination attack.
Although Noelle managed to spear the cereal box, and Frances, Joseph, Lawrence and Conner the First made honourable attempts, it was Connor (the Second) Starling who broke all distance records to win the title for the 2018 Leprechaun event.
Fencing continues to June 20
Capital City continues fencing until June 20, after which we take a break until September.
