Difficulties accessing the space
We recently learned the front door of Royal Oak Middle School has been locked by 8:20 some nights, and the sign directing fencers for late access not posted. Apologies to everyone who had trouble attending as a result!!!
I will be in touch with Saanich to find a solution… in the meantime, if you find the front door locked turn around and walk down the side of the side of the school, down the ramp to the gym door. Bang on the door and we will let you in.
Beginners Invitational
Thank you to all the competitors and volunteers for another successful Beginners Invitational Event! This event provides a competition between clubs, and also introduces beginners to the format of fencing tournaments.
Junior Foil medalists:
Congratulations to Jason Jiang from UVIC (Gold), Alizagada Tang from OSM fencing (Silver), and Kaidence Arneson from Saanich Rec (Bronze).
Senior Foil medalists:
Luther from CCFC (Gold), Carlos from CCFC (Silver) Lexie & Owen from UVIC (Bronze). Check them out in all their glory!
Both Luther from Senior Foil and Alizagada from Junior Foil will be heading to the youth tournament in Coquitlam at TFA December 15 – we wish them both luck!
Congrats also to those who participated in the team bout with their teams: “Blietzkrieg” (feat Sydney, Theo, Luther) and “Elecrtic Warthogs” (feat Owen, Jason and Lexie)! It was an absolute nail biter, with the Electric Warthogs winning (45 to 40) but team Blietzkrieg’s Theo scoring a 10 pointer in one bout to pull them into the lead at one point. Well done all!
Finally, a big thanks to all the volunteers who came from all participating clubs to help and to coach their fencers. We are especially proud of all our youth refs (Theo Patton (UVIC), Noelle Chang Zhelka (CCFC), Lawrence Barss (CCFC, Saanich), Francis Barss (CCFC, Saanich), Evangeline Bisal (Saanich)) who managed the set up, refereed the bouts, acted as time keepers and calculated the rankings after poules. Check out this crew of medalists, coaches and volunteers!
Coming up in December:
Gift Stealing Night! Wednesday December 18
As is tradition, our final night of fencing will be a GIFT STEALING NIGHT!
Come one, come all – even if you haven’t fenced recently, or are from another fencing club, you are invited! No entry fee – your fee is the gift you bring…
Here are the rules: Each fencer brings a wrapped gift with secret contents. It can be purchased (value ~$5-$10) found around the house (hello, old toque Dad will never miss!) or home made (cookies are great! (no nuts please!)). Fencing continues through the night as normal … except each bout begins with the fencers placing the wrapped gift in their possession by the score box. After the bout, the winner decides which gift they leave the piste with. This continues all evening with gifts swapping hands with each bout until we break at 9:35 pm to open the gifts.
2018 gift stealing night:
Note: you will want to plan to stay until at least 9:45 pm to enjoy this event. But there is sometimes post gift reveal duel challenges &c.
CCFC AGM and Election: Wednesday December 11
As a non-profit organization, the CCFC has an annual general meeting of our members every December. We report on our finances, review the years’ activities, and elect a new board of directors. Everyone who has paid fencing fees to CCFC in 2019 is eligible to vote and run for the board at this meeting. And yes, youth fencers are voting members – and even elect their own rep to the board.
Winter Break
Last date of fencing in December: Wednesday December 18, 7:30 – 10 pm (Gift Stealing Night!)
First date of fencing in January: Monday January 6, 2020, 8 – 10 pm (New Year Fencing Fun!)
