Club Update, COVID protocol and a SURVEY!

Club update

We are still awaiting news from Saanich Recreation re dates for re-opening of our gym to community use groups. As the gym is in a school that is about to reopen, we don’t expect to start practice earlier than October.

The Board met over the past months and

set COVID safety protocols (based on Via sport and guidelines from provincial and federal fencing bodies

We also decided to

In addition to the above three items, this update has an exciting Barss udpate… scroll on dear reader, scroll on!

Oh, but just one more thing before we proceed to the big news… thanks to everyone who joined our online movie night to watch Stardust … we had a great turn out, the Barss bros made the best popcorn, and we learned that Carlos is a big Stardust fan!

Stardust is based on a Neil Gaiman book, by the way, which is available at the public library! It seems so long ago… see the survey to share your next movie night opinions. Find the survey here: https://capcityfencers.wordpress.com/survey-return-to-fencing/

COVID protocols and restarting the club

The Board has been discussing our options for offering provide under the COVID-19 protocols. We have reviewed the protocols developed by ViaSport BC, and both the Canadian and BC Fencing Associations. (Read them here: http://www.fencing.bc.ca/index.php/2020/06/09/returning-to-sport/)

The board plan for safe practices at CCFC include the following:

Increased health and safety protocols, including: health check on entry, hand sanitizing stations at entry and on piste, cleaning shared equipment (e.g. bungee clips) between users, restricted access to equipment storage, masks required for observers and encouraged for fencers. Note: Fencers will be required to use masks if BC health guidelines or facility institute a requirement.

Equipment: Fencers will be required to bring their own equipment, or rent equipment from the club. Rental will be $250/year, with $225 refunded when returned in reasonable condition. Fencers who opt to purchase equipment when returning will get 100% refund. The club will organize a group equipment order to attain a club discount for those who want their own equipment.

Personal safety rules: no shared jackets, gloves or masks; any shared weapons have grips cleaned between users and before and after practice, fencers arrive and leave in fencing gear (no changing on site), no entry when sick or within 14 days of travel or risky contact.

On the piste: strips set up far apart, follow social distancing rules for referee, those waiting in line, no handshaking- begin and end bouts with a salute, masks encouraged and required when ordered by BC health guidelines

Member survey

These guide how we can operate safely as a club… but they don’t tell us about our members’ specific needs and comfort levels!

Please take our member survey so we can best organize club activities to meet your post-covid needs! Everyone who answers the survey will be entered in a draw to receive a delivery of something cool I find around the house or maybe I make –as long as they live in Greater Victoria!

The survey questions range from fun to serious. Please fill it out!
