1. Practice continues… for now, with some modifications
No doubt you have all heard the province has issued new restrictions in BC to protect against further spread of COVID in this second wave.
What does it mean for the club?
Practice can continue under the new provincial health order, along with a new requirement to wear mask inside public spaces, including recreation centres.
We continue to allow only fencers into the gym, no spectators. And of coursewe have hand sanitizer upon entry and between bouts, and expect that fencers stay home if sick with even a minor cold until tested negative and without symptoms, or until 10 days pass from onset and symptoms are gone.
We received the following update from Saanich Recreation on November 20:
“This memo is to clarify how new PHO Provincial restrictions impact Community Use bookings at the Royal Oak Middle School. PHO orders on restrictions for the Province of British Columbia are currently in effect as of November 19, 2020 at midnight until December 7, 2020 at midnight.
- All current bookings for the purpose of “organized sport” remain in place
- ViaSport Phase 3 is still in effect
- Sports games, competitions and practices can continue with no spectators and no travel outside of the Capital Regional District.
Use of Masks
- Masks are now required in all public indoor settings and workplaces including Recreation Centres and Community Centres.
- For the purpose of Community Use at the Royal Oak Middle School, the District of Saanich considers this space to be like that of a Recreation or Community Centre and as such masks should be worn at all times where possible. At this point it time, we are seeking further clarification regarding whether participants must wear masks while engaging in their sport activity and we will be in touch ASAP with updates regarding this point. It is our expectation that until you hear otherwise, mask wearing should be encouraged right up until your players/participants commence engaging in their sport activity.
It is the District of Saanich’s expectation that the designated supervisor(s) for your players/participants is now responsible for ensuring compliance of the wearing of masks by players/participants at all times where possible. If mask wearing is not adhered to by your organization your permit may be rescinded. Thank you for your prompt attention to these new restrictions and communicating the above information to your players/participants. These are dynamic times and please be prepared for possible changes to these restrictions occurred in the near future, in particular surrounding the use of masks during physical activity”
2. Contingency planning
We anticipate that we may return to shut down in the coming weeks, or may need to further limit activities at practice.
In preparation, the Board has decided the following:
- club members may sign out a dry foil for $25. This is fully refundable upon return of the weapon so they can do target practice at home in case practices are cancelled. Weapons can be signed out this week from Stacy. Please send an etransfer in advance, or bring a cheque to practice.
- If practice is allowed, but bouts are disallowed, we will continue with practice focused on technique and skill development while there is interest
- If we close we will return to the plan for an online class series.
3. Everyone needs a craft project – volunteer to make targets!
Isaac and Trevor are plotting to make some targets for use at the club.
If you are handy with hammer and saw, or are otherwise toolsy, and would like to help, please let Isaac know so he can involve you in these schemes.
4. First goofball night of the season
Monday last was our first goofball night, featuring our PRIZE WHEEL (made by my dad out of scrap and an old bike wheel!) where you could Spin for the Win Conditions!
Check out these medalists!
[And I don’t care who thinks “parry-lunge-parry” is a useless
move, “Lunge Meat” is a good pun!]
5. Online AGM + game night
We will hold our members AGM online, on Saturday December 5, 7:30 pm, followed by a club online games night (of JackBox and/or One Of Us.

Everyone who has paid fees to the club in 2020 is a voting member, and is invited to attend
Our club bylaws and such are posted on the website “documents’ section. https://capcityfencers.wordpress.com/club-documents/
