Hey fencers!
We’re BACK to fencing Monday November 30! And we have updates about our AGM/JackBox social and our annual gift stealing night. Also, December fees (its a short month)
These are important updates so read on!
Fencing is back MONDAY Nov 30, with updated protocol
After the BC government health update we suspended fencing for November 25 to ensure we were compliant. After consultation with ROMS and reviewing the ViaSport guidelines I stand corrected–we are not a martial art as I said in my last email in terms of COVID protocols, but a “GROUP A Sport (low risk)”. We are able to continue practice under the current provincial health orders–although changes may still be made by the province in the coming weeks.
We took some time to review and update our protocols having now had several weeks experience. You can see the updated protocol here https://capcityfencers.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/2020-11-26-ccfc-covid-protocol.pdf
All the new or modified stuff is flagged in red text to allow quick review, so please go have a look.
There is also a waiver (last page of the protocol) which we will ask everyone to sign.
Key items:
Reminder: ViaSport defines “contact” as being within 2 meters. While fencing is low risk, we are in contact during our bouts.
– we added protocol for managing practices with 10+ fencers so that no one ever fences more than 9 other people in a night to limit contact
– we added clearer protocol for changing out malfunctioning items, assisting with gear adjustments, and set up/take down.
– Mask use required except during actual bout.
You can always find this document on our website “Documents and Guides” page.

Annual Gift stealing night
Q: What’s more festive than theft?
A: Theft with sword fights of course!
Every year our last night of fencing is a festive gift stealing party. Everyone brings one gift and we fence all night while stealing gifts from eachother.
This year, our last night is DECEMBER 9.
For 2020 special COVID edition we are adjusting the rules…
Steps to gift thieving glory
STEP 1: Acquire a gift
We each bring a gift valued less than $10. As always we encourage homemade (baking, sewing, poetry … no nuts please) or lovely (!!!!) found items from home (grandma will never use that candle! ). As unnecessary shopping is out this year, please do not go shopping. If you do buy your gift, let it be from a necessary trip to a grocery or pharmacy!
STEP 2: Wrap the gift so it is mysterious and enticing
Wrap the gift so the gift is a mystery item. (Again, if out of gift wrap, do not go shopping Saanich News or a paper shopping back works wonders!!) For found items, please wipe down before wrapping as appropriate.
STEP 3: Win the gift you want
Instead of swapping and passing the gifts around all night, we will place them in a display area, they will be claimed by a different method TO BE REVEALED.
Step 4: Document your findings
Socially distanced photo.
Look how close we got to stand last year! It feels dangerous.
December fees
There will be three nights of fencing in December, and gift stealing night is $5 drop in fee rate as people bring gifts.
As such, the monthly fee for December is $15 for all three nights, or by drop in.
Some of you have paid for the full $40 monthly rate already; this can be carried to January instead. Please contact me to sort out if you wish.
Additionally, a few people had to miss their pre-paid month due to illness, injury, etc. YES we can carry forward fees in this case too. Please email me to sort that out.
And if you haven’t paid yet (!!), please be in touch!
