Fencing is Back September 11 – updates on my last message, registration, news, cool workshops!

Hello fencers!

We are back to fencing on September 11 and I can’t wait to see you all! Information on registering/beginner classes and exciting new programs follows.

I have had a could questions from people about registration and a few who did not receive it… so I am copying the original below and have some added info in response to questions in bold.

But first… BABIES! BABIES! SWORD WIELDING BABIES!

Congrats to Coach Anna and Robin on the birth of Hazel just a few weeks ago!!

And to Coach Benson and Claire on the birth of Chester a few months ago!!

Not to mention Coach Trevor had his second child just last fall !! …. what is happening with the coaches this year?

Seems like we have a good crop, but the only question is whether there will be one fencing each weapon or will they form some power Epee team?

Renew your club membership/register for fall!

https://capcityfencers.wordpress.com/renew-your-ccfc-membership/

Please take a few moments to register! Registration needs to be renewed each year, whether or not you come every night, drop in, or are a coach. 🙂

Practices will continue to be at Royal Oak Middle School (ROMS)

Mondays 8 – 10 PM

Wednesdays 7:30 – 10 PM

In exciting news — we have booked the full gym, so there will be no volleyballs flying past your head, and ample room for beginner classes and loooooooooong pistes. Okay maybe that wasn’t as exciting as all the babies but it is still pretty darn good!

Our costs are up and so unfortunately as decided at the AGM our fees have increased a bit for drop ins, and one-month membership is also more expensive. But take heart, if you are here for the full year it is still $400 for ten months, and yes, we can take that in installments. We also have a 10x drop-in option to make that more viable.

If you come once a week or more, the best deal is the annual membership.

If price is a barrier to fencing, please talk to me, we aim to include everyone. And remember, as a volunteer-run non-profit, fencing fees for 2 months or more continuous participation are eligible for KidSport https://kidsportcanada.ca/and you can also check out Athletics for Kids: https://www.a4k.ca/ . See their websites for criteria.

QUESTION: How many months in each of the installments? I will invoice you for each month at the start of the year and you pay each month before the 1st. If you want to pay 3 or 5 months at a time, put a note on the registraiton and I will set it up that way.

QUESTION: Why the rate change? The monthly rate provides stability for the club, and our costs are increasing. Because we are grant funded we are not peremitted to build a reserve and need to ensure cash flow.

QUESTION: I can’t start in September but will be there every other month. Can I still get the full year discount? Yes, we can work something out for fencers committed to continuous membership while in town. We know some folks have to work away, etc. Please add a comment on the form and I can be in touch to make a plan. Our goal is predictable cash flow!

QUESTION: Can my family members share the drop in punch card?YES. Please put a note on the registration

And all those friends who are jealous of your fencing prowess? Tell them we have TWO fencing classes starting in September and they should join the club!

QUESTION: The dates were weird on Session 2. YES! Sorry about that, it has been corrected?

NEW: Introduction to HEMA

We are piloting a 2-session (4 hours) introduction to Historical European Modern Art. It involves some historical talking and present-day clashing in our brand new HEMA equipment and probably a lot of bad role modelling from James and Isaac.

Lawrence says: Be present, or be a peasant!

You can register on the membership renewal form.

There are TWO sections, both on Sundays 3:15-5:15 at ROMS:

  • Section 1 October 15/22
  • Section 2 Oct 29/Nov 5

Cost to attend is $75.

Limited to 6 people, so please only pick one section.

If you don’t care which section as long as you are with a particular friend/nemesis/frienemy, pick on and put a comment on the form so I know.

OR if you don’t care which section but don’t care about frienemies either, pick one and put a note on the form that you could switch sundays

This is getting too complicated, so I will leave it at that.

Sunday Advanced Youth Skills are back!

Sunday clinics start up on September 17 and run from 3;15-5:15 in the ROMS gym

These are free to youth fencers who have 6 months or more experience and will be of interest to those who want to (a) improve their technical skills and/or (b) go to tournaments with other youth members.

Speaking of tournaments…

If you want to participate in sanctioned tournaments this year, it is time to purchase or renew your Canadian Fencing Federation membership! This can be done here: https://fencing.ca/purchase-a-cff-licence/

A big thank you to…

Our organisation is funded by, or funded in part by, viaSport BC and the Province of British Columbia.

The free Youth Sunday Skills Development Clinic, Girls Intro Clinic and Newcomer Intro Clinic were all made possible with their support. The HEMA class would not be possible without their support to purchase our equipment.

See you all soon!

Stacy
