March fencing schedule

Yes! we will continue fencing through spring break!

YES we will celebrate St Patrick’s day in our own special one-day-late way!

Please note there will be no fencing on Monday April 1 as it is Easter Monday and a Stat holiday. And also because April Fools’ Day is a stat holiday for the club. Ok that’s a joke but it should be, amirite?

Beginners: What’s next?

Oh January beginners, we hope you are enjoying fencing with CCFC as much as we love having you! Fencing at the club in March is included in your beginner fee. So if you want to keep going after March (and we hope you do!) what should you do?

1. Continue fencing by registering as a member using our member renewal form! We fence September through June, so you can currently register to fence until end of June 2024. All fee options are explained on this form. 🙂

2. Sign up for the Beginner foil event at the April 6 Escrime Sundae! This event is free for anyone registered in CCFC’s January 2024 Beginner class

(See below to register!) (And yes, brace fencers, you can register in the regular tournament events at the regular price too if you wish.)

Escrime Sundae: April 6

Tournament may not be exactly as depicted in this AI generated poster. For one thing, the swords will be bigger… or maybe the fencers will be smaller? And there will be no popsicle daggers flying at your head. There may be strawberries flying at your head, though, that actually could happen. … The important thing is that Escrime Sundae is awesome, with or without walnut-wearing elves and fencing foxes Join us for: Senior Mixed Foil, Senior Mixed Epee, Senior Mixed Sabre and for the newbies… our extra special Beginners Foil event.

REGISTER FOR THE BEST TOURNAMENT EVER!

(Let us know if you need help with registration!)

An just for extra fun, because it is our 20th anniversary running this tournament… can you recognize any of these kazoo playing (and ice cream eating) fencers from the first Escrime Sundae in 2004?

Volunteer for Escrime Sundae!

Dear Fencers,

The 20th Anniversary of the first ever Escrime Sundae is nearly upon us! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 6th! Please remember to:

Register. This is the most important thing you can do to help make this event a success! https://www.askfred.net/tournaments/9a997a8a-a17f-4e76-bd62-59b091ec5a62

Volunteer for a task.

Volunteer Duties: Capital City is a member-run organization, and we are grateful for all our members do to make our events a success. We will need: SET UP: Arrive at the gym at 9am to set up pistes, tables, and chairs (~15 people needed). Finished by 10:30am in time for mixed foil.

DIRECTOIRE TECHNIQUE: A skilled job, this person runs the competition and tells everyone else what to do. If you aren’t sure you’re ready but you’d like to learn how for next year, get in touch!

SCOREKEEP/TIMEKEEP: Fencers or parents who would like to help out keeping score and time during the bouts. Help needed all day, but most important during the Elimination phase of the event, from about 1pm.

SERVE ICE CREAM: From about 1:30pm – this job can be shared between several people, or done by just one. Help fencers who are done fencing to get ice cream and toppings; keep the kitchen tidy and the ice cream cold.

HELP NOVICES: From 2:30pm. Help novice fencers to get dressed and understand what to do.

NOVICE REFEREES: From 3:00pm. Want to try reffing a tournament? Get in touch! CLEAN UP: Take down pistes, clean the kitchen, and get the gym ready for the next rental group (~20 people needed). Start around 4:30pm.

To pledge your help, please reply to this email or talk to Stacy, Isaac or Anna at fencing. Thank you for your help! Anna

EPIC! Extra Coaching opportunity

CCFC has been awarded a Community Services Recovery grant to increase training for our fencing coaches. You can help our coaches out—and get some extra fencing coaching at no cost to you—by volunteering as fencing students at clinics on the following afternoons:

Saturday April 20

Sunday April 21

Saturday April 27

Sunday April 28

During these clinics, CCFC coaches will be working with Fencing Master Patricia Howes, who will fly out from Ontario to teach the clinic. She will be assisted by Lynne Seguin, who is also a Fencing Master. Both coaches are part of the Canadian Fencing Federation’s high performance program leadership Patricia is the lead coach for Canada’s Royal Military Academy’s fencing team. Read a bit more about this award winning coach here! Clinics will be held at Vic West Community Centre and the Fernwood Community Centre.
