| You have heard for the Ides of March… but do you know about the Nards of May!?
Yes, that mid-May celebration of the world’s greatest candy, Maynard’s wine gums! But it is not just candy… just as Julius Ceaser and his Senatorial frienemies made knife work famous, the Nards of May comes with a healthy dose of stabbing.
Due to issues, we will observe this important and fictitiously significant day on Wednesday May 14 during club practice.
So this Wednesday, ask each other, “Et Tue Brute?” ** And, [hint hint], the answer is always, “Yes.” Because we are all Brutus. A Brutus with a sweet tooth, sure, but a Brutus nonetheless.
So come fencing and celebrate this most auspicious of fake holidays. |

| If you look carefully at the back of this painting, you can just see original jokesters Anna and Robyn coming up with the idea of Nards of May, and in the foreground, me acting like it was all my idea! |

No fencing on Victoria Day
|
|
| Monday, May 19, is a statutory holiday, so there will be no fencing. Which seems wrong. But there you are.
Instead of fencing, I expect there will be much #wrongsport. And croquet, which is definitely not #wrongsport. |

Corrections & Belated Kudos
|
|
| I would like to make a correction to the past issue of Fencing News. In that issue I erred in crediting the photos from Escrime Sundae. The images below were both in fact captured by Drew Hissen. |
|
|
|
| Sorry, Drew, and once again thanks for all the beautiful photos and sharing them with us (if you missed them, Suhyon and Drew shared them on the discord!) |

|
| Even though Canada just got it’s first ever cabinet minister of AI (ominously proving AI eliminated at least one journalist job!) those who read this email know what horrors in failed art AI can produce!!!
If you, like me, love the fencing foxes at the top of this email, you can thank an artist! In this case, you can thank CCFC/ UVIC fencer Suhyon Bae who created these adorable fencing foxes.
Thanks Suhyon! |

World Cup makes a Point (in line)
|
|
| Ok some unnamed people [author shifts in chair self consciously] were perhaps a bit skeptical about point-in-line at a recent skills and drills session… but it must be said the world cup was a veritable feast of point in line. Example: |

| Have ideas for the club? We really want to know!
We are heading into the final gasps of our 2024-25 fencing season… and would love to know your thoughts on the club, our activities, and what works/doesn’t work for you.
Help us plan for next season by answering a few simple questions in the survey below. I promise it is short! Pithy, even! |

** END NOTES
If you are bored by the predictable Et tu Brute? you could also try these other quotes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar:
This was the most unkindest cut of all. Antony (Act 3 Scene 2)
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war. Antony (Act 3 Scene 1)
As he was valiant, I honour him. But as he was ambitious, I slew him. Brutus (Act 3, Scene 2)
Let’s carve him as a dish fit for the gods. Brutus (Act 2 Scene 1)
Or perhaps an update to the Bard:
As he had wine gums, I honour him. But as they are delicious, I slew him.
Let’s chew wine gums as a snack fit for the gods! |
