CCFC Beginner Tournament, November 29th!
For all beginners. Come fence on a Saturday and try a low-pressure introduction to a fencing competition!
When: Saturday, November 29th – doors open at 9:00am, tournament starts at 10am. Plan to be there 9:30 to 3 pm. We expect the tournament to complete between 1 and 2, depending on numbers.
Where: Royal Oak Middle School, 751 Travino Lane
Cost: FREE!!!!
What is it?
This is a low-pressure friendly event to teach new fencers the structure of fencing competitions. It is part of our beginner program. CCFC invites beginners (currently in a class or recently completed an introductory class) who have not yet participated in a fencing tournament to participate. UVIC and Saanich recreation beginner fencers are welcome. check with your coach if you are unsure whether this event is right for you.
We will take the time to explain each stage of the event to participants (and friends/family in the audience) and coaches will be present to help with equipment and give advice.
All equipment is provided, participation is free. However, we do ask that you register to help with planning. Once we have a registration list we will send an email with more details about what to expect, and what to bring.
The length of tournament is dependent on the number of fencers. To participate in the tournament, you should plan to be at the gym from 9:30 am to 3 pm.
The tournament may end earlier than 3 but we will round out the day with casual fencing and invite club members to come join and meet everyone.
PLEASE REGISTER by Wednesday, November 26th – event will not run if we do not have 10 fencers registered by Wednesday evening. 🙂
How do I register?
To register as a tournament participant or volunteer reply to this email with the fencers full name, age and whether they are right or left handed! (this helps us group our events by age category and sort out how many left handed blades we need on the day)
Volunteering at Beginners Invitational
Can you help with the beginner’s invitational? Experienced fencers—especially our youth members–are invited to attend and learn to run the tournament. Volunteers will referee, time keep, coordinate bouts, learn to score the rankings. Volunteers should plan to be at the gym from 9 am to at least 2pm for referee and set up duties, and to 4pm for take down. This is a small event and we expect to run the event between 10 am and 2pm. Tournament events may end earlier than 2, but this depends on the number of attendees.
Volunteer tasks include:
– Set up the gym (9 – 10 am)
– Take down the gym (3-4pm)
– Referee 10 – 2pm
– Time keeper (10 – 2pm)
– Score keeper (10 – 2pm)
CCFC Annual General Meeting – Wednesday, December 3rd
The only thing better than fencing is voting about fencing before fencing!
CCFC is a non profit, and member-run club. Our AGM is Monday December 3rd, right at start of fencing practice in the gym.
When: Monday December 3rd at start of practice (7:30 pm). Once meeting business is done, we fence as usual!
Where: In the gym at the start of practice.
Who can vote? Every member of the club. Yes, that includes you, kids! If you can wield a sword, you can mark a ballot. Except we will raise hands not mark ballots.
Can any member stand for the board? YES. If you want to help the club, please consider standing for election to the board. We meet about 4 x per year and make decisions about budget, grant applications, policy and major purchases.
Should I stand for a seat on the board? YES. We need a strong board that represents our members to keep our organization going!
Can youth members vote? YES. Members who are under 19 also nominate and elect their own youth representative to the board. The youth representative must be at least 16 and no older than 18.
